It’s not every day two separate creative
writing groups (one over age 80, the other
under 12) get together and launch two
anthologies. In December, Tairua librarian
Emma Darragh hosted the book launch of
two publications,
Tuesdays at Two
and the
kids’
Their Own Words
.
Tuesdays at Two
includes works of six
writers from Tairua Residential Care. Once a
month on Tuesday at (you guessed it) 2pm,
Emma facilitated the centre’s creative writing
workshop. Exercises were then shared at the
following session.
Audrey Crownshaw’s art is featured on the
front cover, very inspiring for a lady who will
be turning 100 next year! Putting pen to paper
rather than brush to canvas was a brand new
experience for Audrey, “It opened up a whole
new world to me”.
Proud tears were shed by parents as they
picked up copies of
Their Own Words
, the
product of the young writers from Tairua
Primary School, ages 8 to 12. The two
anthologies were funded by Friends of the
Library and TCDC.
“The interpretations of the themes between
the groups were very similar”, notes Emma.
“We’re all the same when it comes down to it,
no matter how old or young. And that gives me
great comfort.”
However, there were differences in how the
homework was completed! The difference
between the two? “The children would leave
their homework to the last day”, she says,
“where the residents would be doing their
homework straight after the lesson!”
Both residents and students were appreciative
of Emma’s dedication. John Henderson (who
was jokingly warned not to speak for too
long) was almost speechless. “I am lost for
words”, he adds. “Emma pulled us out of our
somnolence and got us to do something”.
The collections can be viewed at the Tairua
Library or are available for download at no cost
at links below. Due to popularity amongst family
and friends hard-copies are now out of print.
