Our school – 9 minutes north of Whangamata in a rural setting on SH 25
– has approximately 130 students. Most students are from Whangamata,
and we have a supportive community of parents, PTA members and BoT
members who make Opoutere the successful, happy school that it is.
Our philosophy is based on modern teaching
pedagogy balanced with old fashioned values
and expectations. We maintain a strong
emphasis on reading, writing and mathematics,
yet we also work on inquiry learning through the
arts, music, social studies, science, technology,
sport, Te Reo and our local community and
environment. Our school promotes RESPECT
which is our school motto, citizenship, service to
others, leadership, self-management, financial
literacy, enviro-education.
With the help of sponsor Neil Richardson, we are
currently upgrading our website and hardware
to meet the demands of the changing IT learning
environment. Each class has had an interactive
whiteboard for the last seven years.
• Technology – making kites for Matariki.
• Enviro/Service – planting natives at the Wharekawa
Estuary.
• Arts – Clay sculptures to depict our school houses.
• Production – Whangamata Memorial Hall.
• Heritage – Our kapa haka performing for a local whanau reunion.
• Enviro/Health – growing our own goods to sell & give away and to make into delicious
meals at school.
