COROMANDEL LIFE SPRING/HOLIDAY 2018_19

Following old railway lines between

the historic goldmining towns of Waihi,

Paeroa, Te Aroha, and Thames, this

grade one Trail is one of New Zealand’s

easiest ‘Great Rides’, suitable for

everyone from kids barely out of trainer

wheels, to those who’ve been pedaling

since the days of Penny Farthings.

From the stunning Karangahake Gorge

to the salt-licked Shorebird Coast, this

Trail gives cyclists plenty of reasons to

stop and get off their bikes along the

way. Homegrown cuisine and produce,

heritage sites and accommodation

options are dotted along the trail, allowing

you to customise your ride to suit your

interests, timeframe... and your appetite.

The Hauraki

Rail Trail

to three days, beginning in any of

the district’s five main towns, Kaiaua

(Miranda), Thames, Paeroa, Waihi or

Te Aroha – all within two hours drive

of Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga.

Advice, accommodation, bike hire and

shuttle transport are all available along

the route.

THE SHOREBIRD COAST

The sight of thousands of resting

seabirds as you travel this 55km northern

section along coastal stop banks of the

Firth of Thames from Kaiaua (Miranda) to

Kopu and onto Thames is a ‘must do’ for

all bird enthusiasts this spring.

Take a short wander along a pleasant

boardwalk to the Bird Hide at the Robert

Findlay Wildlife Reserve on the Miranda
