Thames’ Porritt Park

improvements in play

New landscaping, fencing, toilet complex and

playground equipment have been installed at

the Porritt Park in Thames, near the Goldfields

Shopping Centre. Shown right, the new swing

set was installed; the swings are now ‘full

swing’, and the ground is covered with thick

layer of wood chips.

The new toilets are installed, with a student-

designed mural on one of its walls. The entry

plaza is paved with attractive red and grey

pavement set off by new safer fencing.

The big change, not welcomed by all, will be

demolition of the historic play structure, the

Lion’s Club

Wakatere

paddle boat.

A new skate board park is now part of the

Active Thames 2018 project, which also

includes an indoor gymnasium at Thames

High School and a multi-sport clubroom

development at Rhodes Park by 2018.

The skate park would be built near the

playground opposite the Thames police station,

and would also cater to scooter and BMX

riders. The skate park is being designed by

Jason Parkes, a former pro who owns Premium

Skate Designs.

Kopu to Kaiaua route highlights

Hauraki Rail Trail

expansion includes

Miranda Shorebirds

In December, TCDC gave the “go” to start

on Stage 2 of the Hauraki Rail Trail, that will

eventually connect all the way to Auckland.

This stage, a relatively flat grade, will lead from

Kopu, over the Kopu Bridge, along the bottom

of the Firth, then north along the estuary shore,

past the Miranda Shorebird Centre, and then

north to Kaiaua.

Property rights have already been cleared, and

care is being taken to ensure the trail and its

riders do not intefere with nesting shorebirds.

Work should start early this year.

COROMANDEL LIFE 2016 SUMMER/EASTER

The Seagull Centre Salvage Shop and Re-Use Shop on Burke Street in Thames is a

recycling center with a vision. It sponsored the ‘Steampunk the Thames’ sculpture

competition for 2015, won by Karl Simm for the weapon below. It frequently sponsors

art workshops such as one in January, where kids made pencil cases out of recycled

mateials. A butterfly sculpture is another recent project.
