The Three Ferries
Want to get the kids out on the water without making a big deal
of it? Consider a ride on the region’s ferry shuttles. The BIG ferry
adventure is the service by Discover 360 Cruises between Auckland
and Coromandel Town (courtesy van shuttle into town). See
www.360discovery.co.nz.Pauaui/Tairua.
A smaller passenger ferry operates between Tairua
Wharf, the Paku jetty and Pauanui. (Irregular schedule: Call the
Tairua Information Centre 07 864 7575 for timetable.) Roundtrip
fares are reasonable for this short trip.
Cooks Beach/Whitianga.
You can also choose to take ferry
between Cooks Beach ferry landing and the Wharf at Whitianga,
which is near the museum and shops. Roudtrip fairs are reasonable,
but it’s a short trip. See

The commerical mussel buoys are located in sheltered areas, and
the shellfish operation provides plenty of feed for fish, particularly
snapper. So, a boat fishing trip is usually a safe bet for kids who
might get seasick in deeper waters. And, you can SEE the fish over
the side of the boat.
The
Mussel Barge Safari
is
one surefire place to catch fish
for your dinner. Located on
Hannafords Wharf on Te Kouma
Rd. south of Coromandel town.
www. musselbargesafaris.co.nz.In Kennedy Bay, you can kayak
out to the mussel reefs to fish.
Fishing lodges will also taxi you
to a fishing location and pick
you up later in the day.
