events. Year 8 student Sophie McDonald exclaimed, “It was fun getting wet
when I ran through the swamp to get to the finish line. I also like the way cross
country makes me work hard, challenging my fitness with the steep hills.”
This event traverses local farmland which includes steep hills, challenging
terrain and muddy swamps – a ‘bonafide’ cross country course where
children challenge themselves, displaying stamina, determination and
resilience to achieve their goals.
Rachel Barnett shares about their recent move to Pauanui from
Auckland. “One of the reasons we chose Hikuai School is because of
its family atmosphere. We noticed that the kids play with different age
groups with ease and there is a real sense of welcoming to our girls
Ruby, 8 years, and Chloe, 5, when they arrive each morning. Coming
from a big school of over 750 students on the roll, many of the juniors at
our old school never got to know the senior pupils.”
The school’s open door policy means we feel comfortable
communicating with teachers and the principal at any time.”
Hikuai School prides itself on creating a ‘family culture’, a real feeling of
family, which is even reflected at lunch times, when the whole school eats
together at shared tables as shown above. Small class sizes also embody
this school philosophy, with senior pupils taking on leadership roles,
encouraging and supporting younger students particularly during sporting
events (eg Cross Country).
