and commitment has
been recognised for three
outstanding members
of the Waihi Beach
Lifeguards Club at this
September’s Surf Life Saving NZ Awards of
Excellence (the Grammy’s of lifeguarding)
Seen above are: Andrew Cochrane (l) and
Christiaan Maarhuis (r) both won Service
Awards, and Christiaan also won the NZLGB
Lifeguard of the Year 2016. Lucy Scown won
DHL Instructor of the Year 2016.
The group also was awarded the KatiKati and
Waihi Beach Community service award for Best
Volunteer Group. There are a number of ways
to be involved, from full on lifeguard training to
support positions that involve no swimming.

Steampunk the Thames
blasts in November 11-13
T his successful annual Thames festival of
everything Steampunk not only builds on
itself with established costumes, props and
vehicles, the format of the festival ‘demands’
some viewer partcipation to be fully in on the
spendid spunky-punky fun of it all.
The programme this year includes a parade of
punked vehicles, a street circus and carnival,
a gala ball at the Bella Pump House Tech
Museum, a burlesque and a music hall, mini
train rides, talks by experts at the Thames
School of Mines, a banquet and Sunday
breakfast, and before-festival workshops to
help craft your outfit – plus competitions in art,
photography, sculpture, poetry and, yes – even
a Steampunk Selfie Contest!
One of the groups performing at an added
burlesque “early show” on Friday at 6:30 is The
Blue Sapphire Electroswing Collective, a
flamboyant group comprising of an electro-
swing DJ, vocalist, dazzling saxophonist and
stunning burlesque performers. Both shows are
slated at the Grahamstown Bar and Diner.
