“The season got off to a rough start
with a huge chunk of the core team
leaving, and other players unsure of
their availability”, says Coach Neil
Taylor. “At one stage we weren’t even
sure we would have a team! But, in
true Tairua fashion, we rustled players
together – some coming out of the
wood work while others were dragged –
and the season was on!” The team also
had an unlucky run with injuries with
some games having only a couple of
men on the bench.
With all the obstacles, the boys did
incredibly well, placing 5th in the
competition. Neil adds, “Under the
circumstances and numbers shortage
they should be extremely proud of their
achievements”.
Several players were even picked to
play for the Thames Valley Swamp
Foxes and their development squad, this
number increasing every year.
Tairua rugby is looking promising with
the success of both the junior teams over
the 2012 season. Two teams represented
Tairua in the Thames Valley Junior
Rugby Competition in games as far as
Paeroa and Waihi.
The 9th grade team (5-8 year olds),
coached by Dave Bennett, Devan Rowe
and Glenn Kilpatrick came out unbeaten
and won their section of the 9th grade. In
addition to their trophy, they were voted
best and fairest team by the other teams
in their grade. Well done guys!
The 8th grade players (8-10 year olds)
were coached by Joe Ferguson and Blake
Hill. A “nail biting” final was played
between Tairua and Whangamata.
The result? A tie! making Tairua and
Whangamata joint winners for the 2012
season. Blake and Joe were especially
proud of the boys “for putting all the
skills they learnt through out the season
into their final against Whangamata”.
If you were lucky enough to be at the
junior finals, you saw that the club enjoys
a wealth of support from the parents.
